100 years since they were literally unleashed the Wolfe Tones are iTunes No.1 with Come Out Ye Black and Tans.

Did Churchill inadvertently hasten the Irish Free State?

My grandparents fled the Black and Tans, to England and work in the mines-it has been onwards and upwards since. I am hopeful for an independent unified Ireland very soon.

I was expecting a drink made from half stout and half pale ale.

My grandmother left Dublin after meeting my grandfather who was in the British army in Dublin after WW1 (not in the Black and Tans, I hasten to add!) She returned to England with him, and like you it's been onwards and upwards since.

I'm also extremely grateful to said grandmother (who in all honesty wasn't a favourite of the family!) for enabling me to claim my Irish citizenship and the passport of an EU country

I am so on the point of trying that route, but not sure if it would benefit my offspring or partner.

Ps I have enjoyed all of the above routes too, with some trepidation!

Is that one Ireland, independent of foreign powers and re-unified with the rest of the U.K.?

I don't think that there was any one single event that brought about the Irish Free state. The problem with any discussion on Ireland is the level of emotion often outpaces the level of historical fact leading to skewed nd one sided arguments.

So, will it be Irish Kate from now on...?
