The country that brought us Bat soup and other tasty delicacies like Donkeys penis and god knows what else has had the use of Bear bile approved by the National Health Commission of China as a remedy to treat corona virus infected patients. Apparently it only works when mixed with goat horn and herbs.

And this country is meant to be a shining example of how to combat the Corona virus?

Thought this was going to be a thread grilling Grylls. I can bearly believe it isn't, but it's grizzly nonetheless.

I suppose it's a bit like the UK deciding that off-licenses are "essential", and can open during lockdown - a policy of no inherent value, fairly likely to actually increase the spread of the virus, designed simply to placate people and help maintain social order.

To be fair to the UK, China's method is a lot worse if you're a bear.

I would say if China wants to be taken seriously in the medical world it needs to distance itself from barbaric medieval practices.

Devil's advocate: how would individuals in the western world react if tomorrow it was announced that a glass of bile gave you instant immunity, or 100% cured or similar magic property?

That would be an interesting conundrum.

Not really. It would follow the normal path when finding natural stuff which is a good treatment.

Isolate the key component then create an artifical pure version.

Not really, you'd find out what the component was in the bile with these miraculous properties and synthesise it, rather than torturing bears for shits and giggles.

Beat me to it!

It would never happen though. Chinese traditional herbal medicine can be quite good. Plants make many useful molecules which the modern pharma industry uses in a purified form.

Any product from an animal though is digested into amino-acids. So bear bile, rhino horn, shark fin, once you've eaten it it ends up being the same as a chicken nugget.

They don't just kill the bears to get the bile. They put them in a cage so small it can't move at all, they cut it open and stick a tube into the gall bladder so the bile is harvested continually. There's only so much devil's advocate, whataboutism and cultural relativism you can do before you have to admit that something is aweful.

Hadn't thought of that! So why doesn't China get on and do it and convince their population they don't need bile, rhino horns and all the rest of the crap they use?

For the same reason we have anti-vaxxers (if a decent vaccine is found for covid19 it will be entertaining seeing their response) and fans of homeopathy in the UK.

Just because something is complete bollocks doesnt mean that people dont believe in it helping them and unfortunately people pointing out tedious facts like at best it hasnt been tested and at worse it has been tested and been shown to be crap are often ignored.

The anti vaxxers and homeopathic crew would be all over it in a hot minute. So long as it also provided protection from 5G radiowaves. :/

Edit: beat me to it mondite!

The splendidly named Indian Government Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) reckon a dose of Arsenicum album C30 and two drops of sesame oil in each nostril daily does the job
