Human beings need one thing above all others in order to live meaningfully. Some people just have it. Others have to search for it. Hopefully they look in the right places! ( walking and climbing are some of those right places though sadly they dont always provide it) It is the driving force behind everything we strive for. What do you think it is?
Dark chocolate
😊
Ego.
I can't get no ...
I think we all need purpose to live meaningfully, though many things can fall within that definition and it's up to us to find what works for each of us.
Kentucky Fried Chicken
No to all so far. Its just a word. (Its nothing to do with religion by the way)
> Human beings need one thing above all others in order to live meaningfully.... What do you think it is?
~~~Family~~~*
*Just kidding. It's buttered crumpets
> Human beings need one thing above all others in order to live meaningfully. What do you think it is?
Meaning, of course
Purpose?
A dog.
Still no to all. I will have to think of a prize too.
It better be something like dark chocolate and not some silly nonsense like happiness...
>>Human beings need one thing above all others in order to live meaningfully.
>>It is the driving force behind everything we strive for.
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) ?
> I can't get no ...
Goethe would argue, and does in his Meisterwerk “Faust”, that all humans need to strive for contentment and it is this quest for satisfaction, not it’s achievement, that is the essence of a man.
The paradox of course is that contentment, once embraced, robs the man of his essence, which is why Faust, finally near his goal, only allows himself to imagine that elusive moment and dies happy that he has it within his grasp.
“Faust” took Goethe a lifetime to write and the two parts are a real mission to read or watch. Jagger nails it in three minutes.
No one has got it so far. And its not love. Though that prob comes a close second. Contrary to the song ...its not all you need.
This is a stupid game so I'm not playing.
According to the latest Summit Magazine, we need far more than one thing...
Death?
> “Faust” took Goethe a lifetime to write and the two parts are a real mission to read or watch. Jagger nails it in three minutes.
Well, that's because he had so much more Sympathy for the Devil than Goethe.
Climbers like Bonatti had plenty of it I think. Some others I could name didn't. But if I said who they were you would work it out quicker. So I'm not going to.
Goals in life, doing things they like doing. Different people will have vastly differing goals, but they won't be happy if they have no goals.
Air
Beer.
Courage.
“ It is the driving force behind everything we strive for. What do you think it is? “
Reproduction - sex
No its none of these things. And yes I know we need air and food but that is a given. Maybe everyone here has this thing naturally and hasnt needed to think about it much. You are all Bonattis.
Ethics?
Not ethics. Though of course they are important. This thing is far more basic. Ethics grow from this thing I think.
> Human beings need one thing above all others in order to live meaningfully.
Well if it isn't Meaning it must be Humanity
But I'm guessing you probably have something in mind that's more like self-respect.
> Not ethics. Though of course they are important. This thing is far more basic. Ethics grow from this thing I think.
Humanity?
Not that.
Ok, I'll play properly: Humility
Soft toilet paper
Responsibility
Caffeine?
No to all. I can furnish clues if needed. Cant think of a good prize for winner though.
a goal at, any one time
Clue number 1. It comes up in the film Charlotte Gray. Thats a good clue if you can be bothered to watch the film.
> It is the driving force behind everything we strive for. What do you think it is?
Getting into the top 40 posters on UKC?
Remember its something you need above all else. And if Love comes in at number two its not going to be trivial. There is a serious side to it. As I said some of the best climbers havn' t found it an easy thing to keep.
Honesty
Yes I know. I am trying. I only just discovered posting a few days ago. Im using up all my posts this week.....they wont let me out much 😳..
Not that.
> Clue number 1. It comes up in the film Charlotte Gray. Thats a good clue if you can be bothered to watch the film.
Got it! A Beret.
what do I win?
Heroism
Bravery
Integrity
You would have won a beret.If you had been right.
Duende.
Have just looked that up....no.
As Trouserburp stated it must be happiness as everyone wants happiness.
Of course we all want happiness but its not the driving force behind our actions. Not when it comes down to it. This thing is.
Consciousness
Motivation.
Money!
No none of these. I must say I'm surprised that no ones got it.
Medichlorians ?
Looking it up at this very mo....mmmmm theres some crazy stuff out there!
Is the answer you are looking for peace?
> No none of these. I must say I'm surprised that no ones got it.
Irritation...
No not peace but peace might stem from this thing.
Still no beret for you.😊
How about desire!!
I have a hunch that it's water. Except it doesn't cover the 'meaningful' bit.
Vision?
Passion
No. None of the above. And its not Nightmare of Brown Donkeys either.
> You are the winner.😊 well done.
Yes, some doctors and psychologists reckon that where people in certain very hard circumstances are being diagnosed with depression and prescribed medication, the problem ultimately is that they (feel they) have no hope of things improving, perhaps realistically.
I think dark chocolate is a close second during the autumn and winter months.
Is it an old man of aran?
> Clue number 1. It comes up in the film Charlotte Gray. Thats a good clue if you can be bothered to watch the film.
Does it come up in the novel “Charlotte Gray” or couldn’t you be bothered to read that, being too busy making pompous comments like “if you can be bothered to watch the film”.
You’re not doing this thread very well. You come across as a smug patronising loner
I was going to say something sarcy but am being nice as much as possible presently.
A Soulmate? The mystic other half for each of us?
Apologies if it caused offence. It wasnt meant that way.
> Of course we all want happiness but its not the driving force behind our actions. Not when it comes down to it. This thing is.
I would say happiness is the driving force behind everything we do tbh, if you give it some attention you will see what I mean. I do enjoy a guessing game though so thanks and hope was good answer.
Its just an interesting thing to think about. 😊
I think you may have been reading your bible again
I completely agree with your observation, however a previous MD I worked for did not agree, when he pointed out that hope is not a basis for a sales strategy, before canning the sales director. Personally I've found it useful in sticky situations where my response has been along the lines of "I ..... hope this works" along with the invocation of whatever gods I think might be helpful.
hope is good but in those circumstances a plan is often better
> Soft toilet paper
Are you quoting intentionally?
most appreciated if you are - just spent 10 pleasant minutes working out why it was familiar and where it was from.
(If not, thanks anyway!)
Ok. You may have previously figured out a plan B, good job, or there may be plenty of time to construct an alternative.
However life is not always like that, in my experience. So in that situation you can either proceed with plan A - hope applies, or go with whatever alternative seems survivable; hope still applies.
Are you saying you always have a plan? I don't; it wastes my time. I trust my instinct for survival.
A prize
Too late. No prize. Sorry.
> You’re not doing this thread very well. You come across as a smug patronising loner
Do you pracitise in your days off at being a knobhead or does it come naturerally?
Pandora's box was a story of revenge. After all the other evils escaped only one was left, hope. Hesiod considered hope to be an evil, empty and no good, distracting people from industriousness. Others (Theagenes of Megara and Nietzsche) considered hope the only good left to mankind. Plato divided hope into good hope and vain hope and it was the Jewish faith, and latterly St Paul, who made hope a good thing. "Faith, hope and charity" is an interesting discussion for those who wish to consider why you need hope when you have faith.
Personally I'm with Hesiod so I don't think it is the answer to your riddle.
I wonder where hope comes in the scheme of things then. If its not the most important thing. If someone is very ill its not industriousness that (hopefully) pulls them through.
When I went looking for Hope, I didn't get much past the Bake 'n' go counter at Sickleholme petrol station.
And did you find it?☺
I usually find that a moment of worry followed by a quick think stimulated by the worry comes up with a best option.
Hope is great as a background feeling but pretty useless in the moment. There are times when you have to switch off worry or hope and just do what is best - analysing hope might conclude that even the only course practical of action is extremely dangerous. What matters is risk and benefit analysis done quickly
comes down to which choice you have is less likely to end in disaster
I'm not knocking Hope as it sits in a nice valley
> If someone is very ill its not industriousness that (hopefully) pulls them through.
I guess you've never worked in Intensive Care.
> You’re not doing this thread very well. You come across as a smug patronising loner
Wow, that was pretty mean.
> Pandora's box was a story of revenge. After all the other evils escaped only one was left, hope. Hesiod considered hope to be an evil, empty and no good, distracting people from industriousness. Others (Theagenes of Megara and Nietzsche) considered hope the only good left to mankind.
Don't you mean Theognis?
I do indeed. I need to proof read more carefully.
perhaps hope is best left for, and is the best approach to, the things over which you don't have much personal control
Climbing, beer and sex.
> “Hope” means nothing
> hope for what?
Hope for all the other things you need. If you don't have love, or happiness, or a sense of purpose, or even dark chocolate, but you remain hopeful that you will soon have all those things, then you can keep striving through the tough times where only milk chocolate is available.
Was it Bertrand Russell who, when asked what the essentials were for leading a meaningful life, came up with youtube.com/watch?v=Z2LrDzOwuOU& ?
But the greatest of these is Charity
> There are times when you have to switch off worry or hope and just do what is best - analysing hope might conclude that even the only course practical of action is extremely dangerous. What matters is risk and benefit analysis done quickly
This
Nicely put. If solo, plus a lot of shouting; if accompanied, calm and authoritative - hopefully.
> But the greatest of these is Charity
I have always thought that a better translation than Charity would be Compassion, but I am probably influenced by my buddhist roots.
They say that hope, faith and charity are all illusions... However as the prophet Pratchett remarked, our place is to bring the world into existence with our beliefs.
I went too far and ended up in a dark place.
‘Hope makes a tasty breakfast but a terrible supper...’ William Murray - Mountaineering in Scotland
It's kittens.
> Dark chocolate
Co-op 85% dark chocolate is among the nicest I've ever had. I keep going back to it's mixture of flavours.
> Hope
Remorseless determination, too, though it probably doesn't exist without Hope.
This song encapsulates it for me. The big tree in this song, was a play on words, with it being 'the big three' record producers who wouldn't sign The Wailers. Peter Tosh exclaimed 'If they are the big tree/three. we are the small axe!', and the song Small Axe was born.
I kinda like the mixture of things making up their determination more generally, the cause they had of spreading word on what life was like for their people living in poverty in the ghetto, it being their meal ticket out of poverty for themselves, and their spiritual calling in spreading the message of Jah. Nobody was going to stop them with that fire in their belly.
Llamas. Every time I head out I hope to see some llamas. Sometimes I do.
Just listened to it. I've never heard it before. Thanks for the link. I think reggae is hopeful music. But as for dark chocolate...everyone here seems to love it!. Personally I like Cadbury's milk chocolate but I'm probably a chocolate philistine.
> Llamas. Every time I head out I hope to see some llamas. Sometimes I do.
You need to visit the Llama Karma Kafe. You can go on a Llama trek.😊
Great cafe too!
> perhaps hope is best left for, and is the best approach to, the things over which you don't have much personal control
I think hope is what creates the ground between our present reality and our goals/dreams, that without it we'd not aim for them in the first place - we'd possibly never leave our comfort zones.
I'd warrant that nobody ever started a new business without a large degree of hope/optimism/blind faith*.
*Among other things...
I found the llamas there a little snooty. At least that day. Probably me. Now, Nidderdale llamas, they're proper friendly (except for the psychopathic one...)
> They say that hope, faith and charity are all illusions... However as the prophet Pratchett remarked, our place is to bring the world into existence with our beliefs.
I just love that. That bit in The Hogfather makes me cry.
My tear ducts appear to malfunction at that point too I must get around to posting the Hogfather on the films you keep watching thread.
