Hi all

I'm in the market looking for a good quality handheld gps device not only for the UK but Tenerife / Teide, but before I buy I want to make sure there are good detailed maps available of the Teide area.

At the moment I'm looking at the Garmin GPSMap 62ST and the Satmap Active 10 (but I'm not a big fan of touch screens for hill walking when your hands are freezing or wearing gloves), does anyone know where I can get a high quality map for Tenerife / Teide for the above device (or recommend other devices with these maps available)?

I also want to load custom maps (google earth etc) and also the ability to plot my own routes rather than existing trails to it.

I'm trying to work up to some bigger climbs, so it needs to be rugged, water proof and solid with the best gps coverage available (even if it just sits in my rucksack whilst I use a map).

Thanks

I generally recommend OpenStreetMap as a source of reasonable quality, free mapping. Have a look at http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=28.271&lon=-16.556&zoom=11&la... and judge for yourself whether the quality is good enough for your needs.

There are a good number of handheld GPS units which will accept OSM-sourced data, and I suspect that most of them are Garmin models. I use a Garmin 60CSx (the precursor to the 62ST) along with maps generated from OSM by the folk at http://openmtbmap.org/

If you have a phone that can run Memory Map you can get a Tenerife map for that.
