Good UKCer's...

Here in the sunny West Midlands - the posh bit, Worcestershire - we have a remarkable three SAR teams: Severn Area Rescue Association, Mercia SAR, and an off-shoot called Midlands Inshore Rescue something or other.... All competing for the same donations, all claiming to be the SAR team etc...

So who is what, why do they all exist, what's going on?

In reply to ballsac:

Volunteer SAR is (sometimes) a weird world of competing fiefdoms. Some exist but are never/rarely called upon, some are a unpaid emergency service. I have no idea what the situation is here, but the MREW or ALSAR teams are the ones most recognised by Police etc.

For many years a good part of the West Midlands was covered by a  combination of the Longtown and North East Wales MRTs, with SARA doing the wet stuff in between. Several times I drove over from NE Wales to the Wrekin for 'SAR' jobs.
