Hi all, is there anyone near to Pen Y Fan or nearish to this area who can give me a first hand weather report for today? Is it snowing? If so is it settling? How are the roads for driving as I'm looking to walk there tomorrow (Wednesday 23-01-2019). Coming from Bristol area.

Cheers =)

I think Pen y Fan 'resort' is a bit of a misnomer, but there you go! It's been reasonably chilly for a few days with a drop of snow last weekend and a top up last night. I don't think you'll have any problems with the roads, but you may benefit from microspikes on the top paths where snow's been compacted and frozen over-night. Can't tell you for definite as I'm stuck at work today, but that's what frequently happens!

Just seen some reports from others going up PyF today, and there is indeed sheet ice under fresh snow. If you've got some spikey things, take 'em along. I generally fine microspikes and walking poles the perfect combination for this kind of Beacons conditions.

I've driven back from Swansea to llandovery today  but not over storey arms, roads fine and looks like some slushy snow on the hills and beacons. Can't imagine any problems unless there is a big fall tonight.

I use the Brecons webcams to check conditions (but more helpful if there's no cloud!). Gives a good general sense of snow/no snow

Hi mack,

As well as the webcams, suggested by Welsh Kate & Southvillain, it may be worth checking Instagram - under Most Recent - for updates, although not all posts state when photos were taken:

This set seems to be from today:

Similar tags perhaps worth checking on Twitter. This film seems to be from today, too:

Possible there'll be relevant posts on the Ground Conditions in UK Mountain Areas FB page - I couldn't spot any, though, just now:

Happy walking,

Bit of snow lying at home now, but tomorrow looks like a lovely day for walking. I imagine the A470 road to Storey arms will be clear.

Snowing at the top of the Valleys now. Roads should be OK tomorrow but check the Traffic Wales website before you leave.

Cheers Kate, I do indeed have some spikey things and walking poles. Looks like it will be a lovely walk tomorrow. =)

In reply to mack:

A470 currently closed at Storey Arms due to snow/ice.

Just walked down our drive - sheet of ice - I didn't expect that.

In reply to Moley:

It’s even icy in Newport! Fingers crossed for a nice bit of freeze thaw now over the next week.

In reply to stevez:

A neighbour went out just now, he managed about 300m and his car is in the ditch, no chance driving up the little hill, I could barely walk down it! Gritter went through but with no grit........

I'm back! Well that was awesome fun. The roads were nice and clear (only prob there were the idiots driving like they were on a race course). The hills were full of snow YAY. Parked up with no problems (luckily there was one space). Some plonker in a beemer nearly reversed into me when I left, he didn't look, just reversed. Anyhoo, the walk was fantastic, Spikes and walking poles made it so much easier on the upper slopes where there was an abundance of ice, and many folks were very envious of my spikes as they tenderly eased their way up and down the hill.
