My friend told me about this today https://www.lancashire.gov.uk/roads-parking-and-travel/public-rights-of-way...

its brilliant on your smart phone as if you allow it to know your location, it can verify you are on a Right of Way.

He told me the way to find it was google PROW Maps Lcc. (Public Rights Of Way Maps Lancashire County Council).

This is just for Lancs but possibly other councils have digitised their rights of way too, worth searching.

One here for Cumbria, shows bridleways to, not tried on mobile yet https://apps1.wdm.co.uk/Pipcumbriahms/map.aspx?cg=PROW

The OS PROW representation is by and large  correct since they do periodic updates taken from Definitive maps but the authority ones probably reflect changes sooner (but not every authority has a readily accessible dataset).

https://footpathmap.co.uk/ does the same for the whole of the UK. There are some council areas missing, I don't know why - Bradford for example. Some services are paid-for, but the free version works fine for me.

Just had a look at my local area. Seems accurate and doesn't include the non-existent one marked on OS maps which runs through marshland and crosses deep channels you could easily drown in.

Councils, by law are supposed to update their definitive map every 5 years. Some do it more frequent, some don’t bother. Some digitise it and put it online, some don’t. Sheffield don’t and apparently it is in several sections which you have to make an appointment to view.
Some councils are really quick to put on permissive rights of way (and also sign them on the ground) but generally the public don’t get to know about them until the OS decide to update and even then the OS don’t find them all. Barnsley Council is quite good.

In my council, there are separate definitive maps for PROWs and I adopted highways, the later is interesting as such routes are not signposted or way marked as PROWs are, but includes a lot of farm tracks that significantly extend the number of local walks.

The Bradford MBC (along with a number of other urban areas) has large 'excluded' areas which were not required to be mapped as part of the original Def Map process. However if you go to their own site they'll have more online info

Aha! Thank you - that explains it. I see Bradford's own map is really good - it even has a CRoW layer to see access land (mostly Ilkley Moor, of course, but it's still a useful addition).

North Yorkshire CC Highways mapping.  You can zoom in to almost any scale you wish.

I don't use a smart phone for mapping but I'm assuming this would work on my phone.  Like others have said, this sort of mapping is available from most CC highways departments.

Not really a smart phone app, but was recommended to a useful stie which gives some good online mapping info, and wanted to add it to the useful connection on this thread http://www.rowmaps.com/
