This is an out-and-back route to visit the nine large beacons known as the Nine Standards. Their origin is uncertain, but whether a 'stone army' to deter the Scots (a long time ago) or less excitingly, boundary markers, these cairns are nevertheless remarkable, and a magnet for Coast to Coast walkers. This route is pretty much all ascent to the Rigg, and then a rewarding descent with fantastic views of the Eden Valley and the Pennines.
