I remember hearing or reading about a spot in Scotland; it's a sort of glaciallly scoured plateau with erratics sitting on top. If memory serves it is somewhere in the west/northwest and had a name like the devil's chessboard, giants chessboard, devil's pavement.

Problem is, I've found absolutely nothing by googling the above phrases!

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

Satan's washing up bowl

Lucifer's bin bag

The tiddlywinks of Old Nick

The above are the beers my imaginary brewery would sell.

Possibly the middle section of the stalkers' path to Maol Chean-dearg from Annat. It's over 30 years since I was there, but from memory it passes through the type of terrain you describe.

See the large pic at the foot of this:

Not sure as to the exact spot it was taken, but it's what I was thinking of in the post above. Meall Dearg is the hill on the NE side of Loch an Eion on that path system coming in from Annat.

Could well be what you're looking for.

Beinn a’ chearcail has a flat plateau scoured by little gorges (*) into a chess board pattern with small erratics everywhere.

Throw in the view of the bigger peaks and it’s an amazing place to visit.

(*) perhaps a geologist can tell me what they’re actually called

That's the one! That may even have been the photo I'd seen.

Thanks all.

My initial thought as well, although the Devil's Bowling Green on Craignaw in Galloway does a pretty good impression of it in granite:
