Camping stove cooking ideas

I am working at an outdoor center tomorrow and the forecast is horrendous! It's a center with no real indoor activity options but we do have a sheltered area which we could use gas stoves in.

So, we are thinking of doing some sort of cooking challenge. Ready, steady, cook type thing, or maybe a Great British Bake-off style technical challenge.

Looking for some recipe ideas which could be done by young teens with (likely) very little experience of using stoves, but more inspiring than pasta and sauce!

Pancakes. A bit messy but unlikely to give food poisoning even if they aren't cooked properly or end up as doughy lumps.

Jam, golden syrup or sugar for filings - or even do a simple savoury cooked filling, say fried onions and bacon.

I like it, thanks 😊

If you have frying pans, risotto is very possible on a Trangia/similar stove and shouldn't be too challenging conceptually.

Oh, good thought, thanks!

Have you seen the breakfast burrito thing?

Beaten eggs part cooked in a frying pan, lay a tortilla on top, cook a bit further, turn and fill with other stuff (e.g. cheese, frazzles, or something healthier...). Roll and serve.

You may not be saying this after inheriting the mess of ten burnt-on risotto remnants on all your pans...

Of a similar genre of methodology (fry some vegetables and add some carb), fried noodles is also really easy, and hard to mess up with the pre-cooked noodles you can buy in most supermarkets. Fry some veg, add noodles, add egg if desired. Or peanut butter. More skill obviously equals better results, but it's hard to turn it into a true disaster. The only downside is that it needs a lot of flavour adding to be anything other than utterly bland. Risotto is essentially self-flavouring if you have salt and garlic.

Popcorn is fun to do on camping stoves. Though obviously less of a challenge!

Get a load of random tins/packets, take the labels off, get them to pick them semi-randomly and see what they can come up with?  Done that with Scouts a number of times.

If you want a meaty option that won't cause food poisoning then get some sausages that are already cooked and get them to fry them. Add some rolls and sauce, sorted.

Some friends do this when kids are BBQing etc to avoid kids eating half raw food.
