Melting snow for a brew with the Prime Tech stove and heat exchanger pot, 4 kbPrimus have brought out a number of new gas stoves for spring/summer 2017. We've taken a look at two models from opposite ends of the range, the compact MicronTrail Stove, and the heavyweight but powerful PrimeTech Stove set.

Thanks for this review. The combination of a valve regulator and the ability to use an inverted canister (in the PrimeTech stove) seem like an ideal combination for cold weather (for gas stoves.)

One question, can the PrimeTech accept MSR gas canisters?

Hi Charly

Yes, it takes any standard screw-in canister. And yes, the Prime Tech is definitely a good cold weather option

cheers!

Thank you Dan. All your reviews are very helpful.

One piece of info for others. Some small pots will not fit in the larger set. For example, the 1L Primetech pot will not fit in the Primetech 2.3L set, so if someone buys the big set, you might not be able to fit smaller pots well (in the case of the Primetech pot 1L, this is because of the heat exchange opening .) On the other hand, the 2.3L set has three pot stands that can be further unrolled, to fit even larger pots.

I've just come back from a trip to Alaska using the 2.3l Primetch system with the heat exchanger pan for all snow melting and water heating purposes up to 4100m and temperatures of -25C. It worked really well and used very little gas - very efficient. It might be heavy but you save on gas. I wish it had a built in piezo igniter but otherwise not really anything to fault. One of our team had an MSR Reactor which apparently didn't work well in the cold and we ended up supplying water to them on one of the coldest days. We used MSR IsoPro fuel.
