In Go Outdoors sale at present

looks basically a copy of the Terra Nova Solar 2, with entrances at both sides. And the Solar 2 was a fantastic tent. The Rakoon is not the lightest at 3kg; but then that’s only 800g heavier than the Solar 2 for 1/4 of the price.

Has anyone used one? Reviews of Oex tents appear to be pretty positive re the build quality, has anyone had a different experience?

At £70 I’m tempted to take a punt on one...

It has fiberglass poles which isn't so great, though replacement alu pole might be sourced fairly cheaply I guess.

In reply to Timmd:

Ah - hadn’t spotted that. Wouldn’t be planning anything too testing for it, but still...

Anyone out there used any of the OEx range? Decent enough at the price, or limitations quickly exposed?

I’ve seen a few OEX tents about, the most notable one was on Barra in a gale which knocked several other tents flat and it looked rock solid, want this model though which probably doesn’t help !

Have they any others on sale ?

In reply to Dark-Cloud:

Yes the whole range appears to be half price at present. All appear to be modelled on ‘premium’ tents but are a bit heavier, and a lot cheaper!

With that recommendation I think the Rakoon is worth a punt- may take a look tomorrow...

I think it was this one I saw:

Looks a better option to the Rakoon I think

In reply to Dark-Cloud:

yes, I see that ones got aluminium poles, and is a fair bit lighter

the space in the old Solar 2 was huge though, and it was very stable. My brother has taken long term custody of ours (he does use it more) so having a ‘back up’ one would be handy.

How easy/expensive is it to get replacement poles ie I could get the Rakoon, and if the tent body was as good as the reviews suggest, I could ‘upgrade’ to the aluminium ones for better weight and robustness...?

I think it's fairly easy, possibly try Needle Sports or Scottish Mountain Gear.
