Cleaning waterproof jackets

Having spent much of yesterday swimming through peat bogs across the moors yesterday, I got a bit mucky.

(In my defence it was only one large puddle, but I was up to my waist and had to crawl out for several metres before getting to "dry" land again. I was amused to find an abandoned pair of trousers on the other side, from someone who presumably shared my fate without the benefit of waterproofs to bear the brunt of it.)

Having given them a good scrub of all the muddy detritus, my once bright and glorious jacket is now apparently ingrained with mud that won't wash off, so if you have any advice to clean it I'd be grateful, other wise I'll relegate it to mountain biking or put up with being a scruff bag

Cheers

Buy a specialist tech wash and bung it in the washer. Follow manufacturer advice but take care to clean out your washing machine first. Personally, I take out the detergent drawer for a scrub, clean the inside of the door seals with a cloth (always shockingly grebby) and then run it for a hot cycle with no detergent or fabric softener prior to running the jacket through.

Edit: almost forgot, you usually have to bung it in the dryer to activate the water repellent, though a hair dryer may be kinder on the fabric. Also, make sure you fasten all the zips/ Velcro etc

How have you cleaned it so far?

I generally do my stuff with Nikwax or Wilko liquid soap, but I often find that doesn't cut it when stuff gets proper filthy. For those times I use a regular wash cycle with a regular non-bio detergent, then wash with Nikwax/soap to get rid of the regular detergent (and reproof if necessary). That tends do to the trick for me with stubborn stains.

One thing to consider is the jacket's age and if you have washed it before.

Let's say your jacket is only half a year or a year old, then I'd say go for it, follow the instructions as mentioned above.

If it's maybe a bit older (let's say 3+ years), used fairly intensively but never washed, then you might jeopardise the lamination and taping of your jacket during a wash. In such a case, machine washing might do more harm than good.

Modern waterproofs need regular washing and reproofing to keep them in proper condition.

It's getting on for eight years old, although at this age is in fat better nick than its predecessor was. Probably reproofed twice in its life.

I'll bung it in the wash on a gentle cycle and try reproofing after
