Hi

I've started a new job in North Wales that requires working outside and standing around  in all weathers.

I currently have a keela belay jacket, but found ut to be a bit ineffective in the weather today . I've also had a ME fitzroy in the past but i doubt that would be any better.

What's the warmest synthetic belay jacket you can recommend?

Berghaus extrem 7000 belay jacket is really warm and cheap. The face fabic is a bit on the lightweight side and I've ripped mine In a few spots, but it only cost £80 or so.

PHD Alpha or zeta are amazing.  Not cheap I know but worth it when you are out all day in weather like we are currently having.

My alphas about 7 years old and having been used for walking, ice climbing and everything in between still going strong.

DAS Parka...

Sure there are even fatter and warmer, but often much much more on the pricetag.

Where as the Pataguzzi can often be had for peanuts.

If your job is not climbing related, why not look at workwear- something like this:

Sport pursuit have an Arcteryx Fission SV at £320, down from £550. Still expensive but not the totally silly RRP Arcteryx gear normally goes for and their heavy duty SV Goretex is pretty bombproof.

I have a variety of insulated jackets for work and play, some just for emergencies, a dodgy Nepalese knock-off for hanging about campsites etc  but when I'm working in the mountains in cold snowy winters there is one jacket that I use time and again for standing around. Paramo Torres. It goes over everything, is weather proof, and I think It must be made out of magic unicorn hair cos it seems to just block out the cold. Totally. I have the old smock version, but they've updated it to a jacket these days.

As someone else said, don't forget your legs. #loveyourthighs! If you have four layers on top but only one or two on your legs, your core will be cold. Running tights paired with thermals, then trousers or fat salopettes will keep you warm.

I have to do similar for work. If it's really minging a standard bright yellow high vis waterprof insulated jacket is one of the best options in my experience. Doesn't breathe well, look good or climb well, but you won't worry about it and it's a fraction of the price (although you want to take a good look at the hood beforehand).

When i need to be a bit more flexible/discrete/move a bit more I use a Montane Extreme jacket. For me it's probably the warmest thing I can wear, vents reasonably well (other than the arms) and is a good compromise between weatherproof, breathable and rugged - in the sort of weather when you're getting wet whatever, it isn't uncomfortable and stays warm when wet, and dries your inner layers with it when /if it finally stops raining. Also you can just gaffatape up tears etc. in the field and then patch with McNett tape when you're dry again. Relatively cheap too.
