Insurance for mountaineering

Hi,

I'm looking to buy insurance for my next trip to the Alps where I'll do a couple of 4k peaks.

I'm looking for a reliable company that would cover helicopter rescue but preferably other things such as lost or stolen items/baggage, etc.

I know that BMC does insurance but does anyone know any other companies?

Thanks

Have a look at Austrian Alpine Club's insurance...

I can't remember the specifics now but my research took me to SnowCard. I've never made a claim so can't vouch for them, but they claim to cover everything you need and where competitive in price when I purchased.

I've used BMC insurance and made claims with no problem at all.

I've also used some Swiss insurance (the name escapes me) that was very cheap and specifically for helicopter rescue in Switzerland. Not tested as I didn't claim.

Sometimes I just travel with my First Directory annual travel insurance policy and a level of self insurance. They've always paid out really easily and promptly whether medical, delay, damage etc.

The proof of the pudding is definitely not the cheapness of the cover but whether it pays up and helps out promptly when you need it

The web page is in French, though there is a link towards the bottom explaining coverage in English.

Page: https://www.auvieuxcampeur.fr/carte-club/

It's offered by Paris' biggest outdoor shop.

I've had it for years, though thankfully never had to 'use' it, so can't say how well it works. But the discount on shopping and delivery charges has been well worth it.

Who do none of the baggage coverage asked for in the OP

Which you can buy separately and economically from normal sources

You may find however that normal travel insurance won't cover specialist mountaineering equipment if it's lost with baggage, so then you'll be back with BMC or Snowcard and then doubling up your policies.

I've gone with Austrian Alpine Club for mountain rescue cover and regular travel insurance for everything else. Never had to test either though.

Yup this. Also lose/have something stolen in a hut, or in your tent in the valley when you’re in the mountains? Very doubtful a regular insurer will pay out (uninsured activity/not securely stored).

Will any insurance? I'd question whether you really need cover for that sort of event. Yes losing ice axes (say) would be a pain but not the end of the world.

I had a really good experience with Austrian alpine club insurance this year. Covered an air zermatt helicopter and a 'rettungsorganisation' (dunno what that is/who they are but they wanted paid) with no more hassle that bunging the invoices into the post along with a one page form. Also a very quick and competent response when i got in touch due to a change in the amount of one of the invoice lines.

Didn't claim anything Medical.

Enjoy your holiday!

I've used DogTag a good few times but fortunately never claimed, so can't vouch for the claims department.  Good prices though and cover can be tailored quite well for your activity

I have a feeling there was recently a problem with Dog Tag, they changed there cover not to include mountaineering or somthing?

Used both BMC and more recently Snowcard which was much cheaper.

Fortunately I never had to claim on either one.

But also look at the benefits of the membership you look for as it may also get a discount on buying things in huts.
