The Guardian have a new Everest article looking back at the chaos on the mountain last year....

What should be the ultimate achievement in high altitude mountaineering amounts to nothing more than sordid bragging rights, reducing the mountain and its surrounding environs to the world's highest shit tip. Violence, discourtesy, contemptuous attitudes, aggressive egos and theft being the order of the day. I wanted to go and just be there many years ago but not any longer. A sad reflection of mankind in general and its utter disregard of nature and the natural world.

Imagine doing the covid queue for your supermarket, but at 8800m and -40C.

This might also be of interest, I don't think its widely known that at the same time, a team of scientists were looking at installing a weather station on the summit, but had to sack it off due to the crowds. They managed to get it installed close to the top though.  It's one thing having a properly prepared summit bid scuppered by the pay to play punters, can't imagine the frustration of having a mountaineering and career highlight interrupted by it!  Sad to read that even way up there on the balcony the snow is too contaminated with human waste and trash for them to bother taking an ice core.
