Everest's newly agreed official height is now, to the nearest metre, 8849m above sea level.

According to the BBC's in depth article, "The formulas they used calculate the height of a triangle by multiplying its base with its angles."

In reply to Phil Lyon:

Doesn't the height depend on how much snow there is, or is the summit bare rocks?

In reply to Red Rover:

They seem to have included snow this time, although they think there is less snow than normal; the suggestion is that the rock itself may have lifted in the recent earthquake.

Even Everest suffers from grade creep.

Does this mean Everest is now a Nuttall?

Bugger. Not sure how I’d cope above 8848m. Might have to lower my ambitions.

Apparently they worked it out with and without snow

So those who have been up already will need to go again to get the up to date tick?

In reply to Phil Lyon:

Do geologists think that the Himalayas are still being forced higher, or is erosion now gradually reducing heights? Would humans eventually see the first 9000 metre peak if they avoid extinction for long enough?

In reply to Andy Hemsted:

By the time Everest has grown another five metres, mean sea level will probably be ten metres higher meaning that Everest will have shrunk nominally by five metres. Best to tick it now....eventually the summit will be only a metre above sea level.

Must be a very narrow mountain for the small angle approximation to be valid.  I hope they remembered to use radians...

Where is the water coming from to flood the world up to a height of 8847 meters :p
