It's incredible how little progress there was over all those years then all of a sudden bam!  The gear I was using in the 60's looks essentially the same as that used in those early years and It weighed a ton.  It felt like 1 x Ex WD screwgate weighed the same as 6 x QD's.

Some of those early 20th century "snap links" look suspiciously like marine/nautical equipment you'd find in a chandlery
