For fans of the Small Axe films there is a new documentary looking at the educational scandal where ordinary black children were labelled as subnormal and sent to 'special' schools where too often no effort was made to educate.

Read about this yesterday on the BBC site. A type of systemic racism I had no idea ever happened. That's a sure fire way to start someone off in life with a bad set of cards.

ESN was used as a not necessarily racist insult in the 60s and 70s, in the vein of "eppo", "spastic" or "cretin" (apologies for the use of these words as insults but I was at school in rather a sport worshipping toxic bully-rich environment in the early 70s - there were some very unpleasant people around and na doot they have done well out of it)
