A fine, reliable and versatile actor. Initially I was surprised to hear that he was 88 but then again I don't ever remember seeing him young on screen (even in Juggernaut, from 1974, which I saw recently, it seemed like an "early" role for him but he was clearly around 40).

Brazil, The Naked Lunch, and as a last-minute-replacement in the complex lead role in The Sweet Hereafter. Quite sublime. Even in fare such as The Fifth Element, he brought a quiet dignity to proceedings.

Alien too as the cold Ash. Oof, what an actor.

I’m genuinely sad at this.

I hope Bilbo finds peace beyond the grey havens.

In reply to Blue Straggler:

First saw him in Denis Potter's Moonlight on the Highway where he played a young troubled man obsessed by Al Bowlly.  Have been a Bowlly fan ever since.

I also thought he was in a TV drama filmed partly at Upperwood House (opposite the quarry) but can't find any reference to it.

Lots of great roles but for me I think he will always be Sam Mussabini.

And for me he will always be Pod Clock from the tv adaptation of the Borrowers.

He played Bilbo but he also played Frodo in the radio adaptation in the 80s

I thought him fantastic as Frodo with John le Mesurier as Bilbo

He was excellent in the TV adaption of the Game, Set and Match trilogy by Len Deighton

I remember listening to the radio adaptation. My brother in law taped it all and it must have been in 88 or 89 he gave me the tapes. I hadn't even read the books at that point but did so very shortly after.

RIP Ian Holm. He was an accomplished actor.

13, surely? Or were they first issued by the half-hour?

In reply to nufkin:

yes, originally broadcast in half hour episodes!  I recorded the lot back then, as well as the "Hordes of the Things" send-up that still turns up on R4 Extra from time to time.

Hi,

That is sad news.

I think The Homecoming was shot around the same time as Juggernaut. He received an award for his part in the stage version.

Thanks,
R
