That was a cliff hanger - a decent ending, I thought?

Apparently Stephen King said he wishes he had had the balls to write THAT ending in the book.

No. Bad ending. Bussing the refugees back in at the same time as clearing the monsters out?? FFS. Just the soldiers would have been great.

So you're disagreeing that Stephen King said that, or...?

That that would be the perfect ending.

The survivors being driven past isn't the change in the ending between the novella and the film - it's the business with the gun etc:

Actually this one is a bit tricky given that the bloke, although "doing absolutely the right thing" according to public instructions, arguably comes across as the antagonist. Hmmm. Gotta watch this again, it was always underrated and the characterisation was one of its great qualities. There's really not a simple  "good, bad, right, wrong....."

I'm a massive Python fan , but they created that ending just to p**s off people.

I'm no heretic.

I thought is was absolutely genius, especially from the point the history presenter is killed, mixing up different layers just because they can! Pissing off the viewers is part of the game.

Anyway, the accusation of heresy was tongue in cheek, as the issue at hand is totally subjective! Maybe I should have added a smiley..

Ben Affleck's Gone Girl takes that cake for me. It left me feeling so depressed and unsatisfied.

Agree that Holy Grail was disappointing but the Italian Job was a classic!

This discussion of Monty Python and the Holy Grail seems more like a discussion about poor and weak endings. I thought the thread was about gutting heartbreaking “pull the rug out from under you” endings

I always thought that they did that ending because they'd run out of money. Or is that a myth?

The original cut of Blade Runner. WTF?

Having seen the Directors cut and read the book I just couldn't believe they'd tack a happy ending on.
