Staggering!

So much raw talent, so much control, so much passion, so much pure joy! If you think this is terrible po-faced jazz noodling, then you're wrong, it's bloody brilliant
Whats your favourite live music clip du jour?
Just had a good listen and I'm in complete agreement.
Takes a little while to get going, although the crisp, odd-timing rhythm keeps your interest. But when the keyboard starts ... the music flies.
Thanks for sharing.
Yep, really good.
This is my top pick at the moment

The 1970s called, they want their Return to Forever tribute band back.
Love it!

Yeah, you know I just didn't enjoy this quite as much.

Maybe it was the production values or maybe it was, you know, everything.
SP sound more like Herbie Hancock Headhunters to me, and that ain't no bad thing.
Old fart that I am, I've recently been enjoying this (Camel, Homage to the God of Light).

Prog-tastic. The best new to me band I've seen play this year is My Baby; very good live, though I'm not a fan of the CD they released a couple of days ago so shan't bother seeing them when they're in Bristol in a month or so.

The glory of the Headhunters album is that it’s relatively understated and not overplayed (for jazz rock)
Ah, I was forgetting the other highlight from this year's WOMAD; Talisk. Stunning set, they started off playing to a small crowd and as the set went on and the crowd grew larger and larger still, they looked progressively more astonished at how many people they'd attracted.
And they had a mosh pit. Not bad for a folky three-piece.

Probably the best guitar solo ever recorded, with unbelievable tone and phrasing.
The Mars Volta
Roulette Dares

though you could pick any year and any performance.
the playing is a bit rough (drugs!) but the energy is off the scale (drugs!)
Didn't like it. Sorry.
The three 'heaviest' bands of that era - Led Zep, Cream & Jimi Hendrix only had three instruments, guitar bass & drums plus a voice. Amazing performances from all three over the years.
Ok this is great virtuosity which I like but it lacks a clear structure to contain & refine it and give it an anchor. Now for me this hits the button youtube.com/watch?v=4QCOJo9YH9M& The improvisations here are all within the framework of the main theme but there is huge scope for virtuosity within that context.
Miles at his electric best.
And here is what i think is best piece of improvised music ever recorded. In 1959 Miles Davis assembles a band of 5 musicians plus himself to record an album using some of his latest ideas for tunes. This one - Flamenco Sketches - he introduces to them on the day of recording. It is 5 figures (themes or riffs) that are taken sequentially, notably one of the themes is flamenco in origin. He starts with his take on the themes and then invites each soloist to play their version, first John Coltrane, then Cannonball Adderley then Bill Evans on piano (This is so intense) returning to Miles on trumpet. Bear in mind that it is the first time they have seen this music. It was recorded as the first take but tape noise required more and a later take made it to the album. The original was released later. This is simply the greatest recording ever made ..... in my 'umble opinion.
One of my favourite live performances is this from Iggy Pop, smashed off his face and putting his heart and soul into every word in front of one of the best rhythm sections ever:

And for sheer demented energy, it's hard to beat The Cramps tearing it up:
Not so keen on some of those synth voices - but u r right, a great lively ambiance
Here's one I return to:

Janis Joplin

So raw and then she just walks away with a smile leaving the audience wrung out.
Extraordinary. I thought the chap in the middle might just take off with the amount of energy he had
If you like Headhunters check out Resolution 88:
I’ll take your Villa Strangiato, and raise you YYZ live in Rio:

quite impressive audience participation
That's utterly tremendous.
For some reason that I can't quite put my finger on, this moves the living shit out of me: youtube.com/watch?v=qtHmqbnuZQs&
Something to do with their taking something so ludicrous so seriously. Worth watching to the end, if you can bear it.

Afternoon gents (for I assume we're of a similar demographic), mind if I wade in?
Here's my first offering, and a finer performance I doubt we'll see tonight. Anderson at his finest...
Second one from me... Ozzy at his absolute best... youtube.com/watch?v=RZuLBvOtPGc&
And finally (for now, got to get my curry on), just because I can, here she is...
No video, unfortunately, but this is IMO the finest jazz-rock guitar solo of the 70s.

Kicks in around 1:30
Brilliant.
Reminds me a little of Fat Freddys Drop who I had the pleasure of seeing play in Amsterdam a few weeks back!
I'm going to see Killing Joke tomorrow night, 30 years after the last time (Sheffield, Leadmill)
I'll report back on Sunday haha
