The sound engineers at the BBC have been working with some of Jon Hopkins material to create '3D' soundscapes when listened through headphones.

Thanks. For people with two ears.

By the way, Jon, Johns? What's wrong with good old-fashioned John Hopkins?

Jon, short for Jonathan not Johnathan.

Reading Outside magazine I came across a piece about a descent into the Tayos Caves in Ecuador for a four day project, I was happily suprised when it turned out that one of the folks on the expedition was..."Jon Hopkins, an electronic musician from England"

"3-D audio (processing) is the spatial domain convolution of sound waves using Head-related transfer functions. It is the phenomenon of transforming sound waves (using head-related transfer function or HRTF filters and cross talk cancellation techniques) to mimic natural sounds waves, which emanate from a point in a 3-D space. It allows trickery of the brain using the ears and auditory nerves, pretending to place different sounds in different 3-D locations upon hearing the sounds, even though the sounds may just be produced from just 2 speakers" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_audio_effect

Edit: I don't know if the above techniques were employed but I felt completely immersed in the tracks, with aspects of the music seemingly moving around my head in a 3D manner

I've tried out some of the 8D stuff on youtube but it didn't impress that much, but i suspect it may be due to the low quality sound available on youtube. I've tried some tracks I know well on there and they also sounded poor. Need to track down some quality 8D to see if it's any good.

Tubular Bells reference, but we don't (as yet) have that many ears.

Interesting stuff, but I can't say I liked the music chosen. Do it with Tago Mago or something and I'm in.

If you keep listening you get to Four Tet's Live from Maida Vale set which is less introspective and more ballsy (for want of a less guttural adjective, I can't think of a better word to describe Four Tet off the top of my head!)
