A friend into her 90's hip hop recommended Big L as somebody to listen to. Hip hop isn't my usual genre, but I like his flow and way with words - the way he creates a sense of urban tension and struggle.

I like that he wasn't rapping about bling and money and cars, you get the sense of ruthlessness from desperation and anger at circumstances coming through. 

Unfortunately he was shot because of some kind of street beef.

I initially read that as you having a friend in her 90s who was recommending a hip hop artist.

Somebody wanted to kill his brother, and he was around instead I think, and the next  best thing (because his brother would be upset).

A lot of his material seems to be about the struggle to survive.
