Greatest tribute band in the world... ever!

I'm often inclined to take the piss of my brother-in-law's immense liking of the band Green Day. Said piss take usually involves me getting one of my kids to ask B-in-L if he thinks Green Day are the greatest SLF tribute band in the world... ever?

So for shits and giggles, a fun game. Who do you think is the greatest tribute act in the world... ever?

Rules:

1) Format has to be... '(insert name) is/are the greatest (insert name) tribute act in the world... ever!'

2) That's it.

I'll kick off with some low hanging fruit.

Spacemen 3 are the greatest Velvet Underground tribute band in the world...ever!

Lady Gaga is the greatest Madonna tribute act in the world... ever!

Off to see his recreation of his dad's Hot Rats in Birmingham tonight. I hope your friends are right.

Not playing by the rules, sorry, but Hayseed Dixie are one of the most entertaining bands you could ever see live.  They started out mostly covering AC/DC but they've spread their wings a bit since then..

The Counterfeit Stones came to Bodmin almost 20 years ago.

'Keef' had a cigarette pinned to the neck of his guitar, ' Mick' joked about their age, even way back then.

They were great. We were right at the front and I loved it. I'd seen the actual Stones at Wembley way before that, but I think the tribute band was more fun.

I think there are tribute bands that give a nod to The Bootleg Beatles and The Australian Pink Floyd.

They were right! (Currently the interval after a superb performance of Hot Rats.)

Embrace are the probably not the best Oasis tribute band ever. They focus on the boring whineyness of Oasis, rather than the good bits that Oasis ripped off from the Beatles.

I just saw their recent version of Heart of the Sunrise live and it sounds absolutely phenomenal.

Not quite a band, but William Shatner must surely be the best cover artist ever.
He's done them all! You name a famous song and he's covered it.
Bohemian Rhapsody. The original was amazing, but perhaps a bit predictable. Shatner really brings it to life.

I'd go along with that. Lee Pomeroy makes a superb Squire stand-in.  Saw the official YES in Glasgow last year and they were dire.

Nirvana, 2nd rate Killing Joke tribute band.

I once watched a showaddywaddy tribute band. Kind of meets your criteria.

Just a pity they can't get Steve Howe to jump ship. For me Rabin doesn't quite nail the finer details on the classics before his time.

Thanks for the information, but at about £100 I think that I will give it a miss...

Must be my age but listening to Radio 6 triggers a lot of "that sounds like" but too many of the to remember.

Franz Ferdinand, 3 Johns

Ok, I now disagree about the inference about Marillion/Genesis, although depending how tribute band is interpreted, maybe some tribute is being paid.

accepted sense of tribute band G2 are a treat for fans of early Genesis.

The Darkness; a tribute to every rock band from the 70s and early 80s and bloody good at it.

Was going to say Franz Ferdinand, Talking Heads.

I hadn't heard of 3 Johns until your post but I see (Googled but haven't listened to them yet) that they were active around the same time as TH, might be why they've ended up in our suggestions.

In reply to Fruitbat:

Yeah, I could have chosen from a few from that era, mekons, fire engines.

You flatter FF comparing to TH.

I thought the idea was to flatter the 'tribute' band, not claim that they are as good as the original - I may have misunderstood the thread, though. For clarity, I certainly wasn't ranking FF alongside TH, they are nowhere close.

Well, I'd say Dirty Harry are the greatest Blondie tribute band in the world...ever!  And they have a reasonably amusing name too.
