Following Free Solo's nomination for a BAFTA it's just been announced it's been nominated for an Oscar as well.  Box office takings now nearing $20m which is extraordinary for a film with climbing as it's subject matter.

Cliffhanger made $225m in 1993, The Eiger Sanction made $14m in 1975, Touching the Void made $14m in 2004, Everest made $203m in 2015. OK, they're not all comparable, but there's quite a market out there.

You forgot Vertical Limit ($215m), my favourite of the great Hollywood climbing films.

Only if you treat it as a farce rather than a climbing film.

The Eiger Sanction was of course an espionage drama starring Clint Eastwood and George Kennedy; Cliffhanger was an action movie starring Sly Stallone, John Lithgow and Pa Walton.

In those films at least the mountains are just a set for more usual dramatic fayre and in both cases very much a star vehicle.

$20m, wow. Good film though. Wonder how big Honnald's slice of the pie is/was?

First draft of the acceptance speech should it win Best Director:

"...when i heard Alex Honnold was planning to solo Freerider, well needless to say I jumped at the chance to make the documentary, the, if you will, "rockumentary" that you're about to see. I wanted to capture the, the sights, the sounds, the smells, of a hard-working rock climber on the road. And I got that. But I got more, a lot more. But hey - enough of my yakkin'. Whaddaya say, let's boogie!"

I agree. But it stands on the shoulders of giants; it was tee'd up beautifully!
