Quite enjoying most of the choices. Recently I've been watching Adam Hills without knowing how good he was beyond The Last Leg. Happy positive feel good stuff.

I like Stewart Lee sometimes but often he's  repetitive and just not very funny. Oh, but Simon, you just didn't get it. I did, he's doing that bit where he tells a joke then spends the whole next 15mins explaining it's nuisances as a joke in itself. All very clever the first time he does it. Not so much the 10th time. His good stuff is really good but it's getting a thin on the ground. I'll probably still go and see him again but last time he defo was a bit meeh.

The trouble is, even when he's saying something you can't disagree with, he's so f*cking annoying, I can manage about 5 minutes of him, and very rarely find him funny.

Communist? FFS!

Remember the socialists, who started the welfare state and the NHS, remember them?

 Thrudge 26 Apr 2019
In reply to krikoman:

Agreed.  To me, he always comes across an a weak and angry sixth former, full of passive-aggressive bile and trying to pass off bitterness as comedy.  Each to their own, of course, but I've always found him unfunny.

Hey, it's comedy, not a political analysis piece in the FT.  He's commenting on Labour's drift towards the far left and exaggerating to make a point.

And yes, I do remember - and am most grateful to - the socialists who started the NHS and the welfare state.

I went to see "Carpet Remnant World" in Edinburgh a few years ago and I thought, and still do think, he's a comic genius.

Later that week I went to see Marcus Brigstocke do exactly the same jokes but in a much less imaginative, "Mock the week - friendly" fashion, and it just served to highlight the disparity.

I'd say there are probably two kinds of comedians, those who provoke strong opinions and those who are just shit.

I'd recommend seeking out the excellent Daniel Kitson but he so rarely does anything televised.

If you enter William Hague, John Prescott, there is an excellent debate between the 2 of them form a few years back.

I think I have every Stewart Lee DVD there is. The guy is a comedy genius and Imo no one comes anywhere near him.

There are short clips on YouTube of Billy Connelly at Hammersmith in 1991 which are funny and any Frankie Boyle on you tube is excellent. The creativity he brings to comedy is breathtaking. He is second only to Connelly and Stewart Lee at the top.

Something else that is a gem that you can get for free which is on C4 catch up and that's the Comic Strip Presents. Some of that is incredibly funny especially the famous 5 ones.

Yes, agreed. "This is a jolly wizard lunch, Ann. You really are going to make someone a great little wife one day" and "Crikey, that must be a bit of a blow for you, Aunt Fanny" etc.

I also like the Comic Strip does the Miners' Strike, with Peter Richardson playing Al Pacino playing Arthur Scargill:   youtube.com/watch?v=zZOXS_cZyBY&

This makes me laugh too: Extreme Measures, with Trevor Eve:  youtube.com/watch?v=HsS3of0VzUE&

They had a real run of form in the late 80s. I remember Robbie Coltrane's take on Ken Livingston in 'GLC'.

Aw I love all that Comic strip stuff it's amazing have you seen the one called A Fistful Of Travellers Cheques? It's really funny. And the one called War is another good one.

My favs are the famous 5 ones as you pointed out they are absolute classics with

" The well know scientist and homosexual Uncle Quentin has been kidnapped again"

"Now I can proceed with my anti-social behaviour  ".

The lot of them were an incredibly talented bunch Rik Mayall, Richardson, Edmondson, French, Saunders, Robby Coltrane etc

Just catching up on this thread after a bit of time off work. I know that comedy is subjective but I get the impression that this is an American version of Jim Davidson. He was funny at first but never evolved along with societal changes.

Sorry.

You didn't quote my post so I'm not sure, but I think you're referring to Bill Burr. If you are, I'm rather nonplussed by the comparison. Both are non-PC, but beyond that I'm failing to see the similarities.

> Sorry.

No need to be sorry, sir. Your comedic preferences are no more valid or invalid than mine. Thank you for starting an upbeat and humorous thread.

No. Bill Burr and Jim Davidson are poles apart. Jim Davidson was (is) a racist, homophobic bigot and Bill Burr is funny. You should watch his "I know you shouldn't hit women.....but" bit. It is comic genius
