inspired by a recent post about climbing books, what climbing/mountaineering related films would you recommend? Apologies if this has been discussed before but I didn't see it in a brief forum search

Lets start off with some obvious ones

Dawn Wall and Free Solo (which don't seem to be available outside theatres yet)
Valley Uprising
Touching the Void
Masters of Stone 1,2,3,4
Cliffhanger (couldn't get past the first 10 minutes of this somehow)
Vertical Limit
Everest
Meru
Mountain (with Willem Dafoe, beautiful images but not much content)

How is vertical limit in a list of recommendations???

That a side, Life on Hold, the Real thing and the first Psyche film are my picks.

Don't know if its on line but 'Break on through' is a 70s classic

It could have been worse, I could have added "The Mountains Between Us"

Total Control

In reply to george570:

Cliffhanger obviously.

Another vote for The Real Thing, the best Climbing film ever made.

That video of Ron on Lord of the Flies, and Jimmy Jewell soloing (Rock Athlete and Total Control)

Hard Grit

’80s  Birth of Extreme

Cliffhanger is ridiculous for so many reasons, but I don't think it's that bad at all. It has John Lithgow hamming it up, the music from "Last of the Mohicans" but ever so slightly different, and is certainly a far better film than "Vertical Limit".

Plus it has that amazing aerial stunt which these days would just be done with CGI.

AND Janine Turner from Northern Exposure!

A Life Ascending.  about a guide and ski mountaineer

I saw it at SHAFF one year and it was a really good film.

And Wolfgang and Ron Kauk doing the climbing. There are tales of Wolfgang humiliating Stallone on one-finger, one-arm pullups

I agree. The first ten minutes is utterly, utterly gripping, and the rest is a great romp.

And while on feature films, Five Days One Summer is genuinely good and The Eiger Sanction is really good fun.

'First Ascent' is an old favourite. And I had a soft spot for 'Higher Ground' too

Watched Mountain narrated by Willem Dafoe last night on BT TV download. Brilliantly shot but so wish they'd described where the climbs / mountains were - the wing suit flyers were awesome

'Death of a Guide' was an excellent film from the 70's.

Hard Grit is the only film you need

Set in Stone is lovely

The Pinnacle is great too

Also as others said Hard Grit is awesome, and I love a couple of the shorts in Hard XS

Specifically “Choss” and “Esoterica”

Onsight is also pretty good tbh, and Wideboys is fun

I have to say I’m much less impressed by some of the recent commercial UK options

because it's hilarious.  Dynamic cam placement!

Suggestions:  Sufferfest and Sufferfest 2.  Stumped (very funny).  I quite like Cedar Wright's film-making style, but if you don't then avoid all 3.
