Afternoon all,

Just rediscovered Divine Comedy but mostly Neil Hannon and forgot just how unique he is. So whats your favourite songs?

Couldn't pick one so here are my best 2:

Two of his songs I've always been fond of are  the Gin-Soaked Boy and Tonight We Fly.

Quite a few listed so far are ones that I somehow found just a bit too much on the smarmy side (I realise that this is a bit like saying some cars are bit too much on the "4 tyres and a steering wheel side") but for me the favourites are mostly pre-Casanova (well to be honest apart from some singles like National Express, I drifted away post-Casanova)

I'll go with Tonight We Fly and Don't Look Down

If you are in a certain mood, Tonight We Fly is actually incredibly moving and multi-layered. I remember 22 years when I read about the suicide of Chris Acland from Lush, I listened to an acoustic version of Tonight We Fly on repeat for a while.

From Casanova I really liked The Dogs and the Horses.
Also, I got to enjoy Songs of Love without knowing that it was the Father Ted theme music, as I hadn't seen Father Ted at the time (and I had an advance copy of the album )

His cover of The Smiths' There Is A Light That Never Goes Out is worth a listen.

His cover of Throwing Muses' "Hate My Way" is also worth a listen and somehow doesn't raise the ire of all the precious twee sycophantic Throwing Muses fans despite changing lots of lyrics (the "Michael Rodd is a God" one is fab...)

In reply to Denni:

'Lost property'has always resonated with me!

We had 'Absent friends', My Dad's favourite, played at his funeral. One day I'll be able to listen to it dry eyed

In reply to JJ Krammerhead III:

That is interesting I am not overly familiar with Absent Friends but, as alluded to above, I think Tonight We Fly could be a fitting song at a funeral. The imagery and the rich tapestry of human life that it creates....plus of course the closing lyric is very obviously and unambiguously a celebration of a life lived.

Alternatively, there is a certain genius to the lyrics of ‘an English lady of a certain age’....

...’no, you couldn’t be’

If we can include The Duckworth-Lewis Method then I find Mason on the Boundary quite sublime.
