There's accepting your melancholy or there's using as fuel for your indignation (I suspect you indulge in the latter judging by your playlist) there's a place for both approaches I believe
Interesting gender bias on this thread. Aside from my female-heavy posting, plus others naming PJ Harvey and Portishead, and let's put Pixies in there too as Kim Deal was a key member, all these bands are very male (I don't know all line-ups, and I know Paz "new Kim Deal" Lenchantin was in A Perfect Circle)
I'm not really making any strong point here, it's just an observation

I think you're assumption is correct, it's amazing how musical tastes can be a reflection of our personalities....
