Ear Hustle, from inside San Quentin prison.

I've just discovered the Outside Magazine podcast too, which is very good and has a big back catalogue (so not exactly new)

This American Life

Radio 4 Costing the Earth

Stuff You Should Know

Guardian Long Reads

Radiolab

Stuff of similar ilk to "Outside"

Out there

The Sharp End (also pretty morbid...firsthand accounts of climbing accidents. A far as I can gather, it's hosted by a woman living in a bus in Alaska...which is pretty cool!)

And other stuff I've found interesting & listen to regularly:

The life scientific

The Moth

Freakonomics

Kermode and Mayo's Film Review (hello to Jason)
Page 94 (Private Eye podcast, sporadic release but always good)
The Joe Rogan Experience (the host can be an acquired taste but he has a good selection of random and diverse guests and long conversations)

Second, this American Life, all are great but maybe start with Serial 1 or 2, S-Town takes a bit of getting into and I think you need to appreciate the style of journalism;

Big fan of BBC Thinking Allowed

Little Atoms can be good

Partially Examined Life if as you say you fancy something more challenging

Finally, I can't believe no one has mentioned Jamcrack Podcast!

Last Podcast On The Left - macabre, black humour, focusing on serial killers (many you will not have heard of) as well as other dark subjects

The Joe Rogan Experience - tonnes of interesting conversations and interviews with a wide range of people and topics - he does his absolute best to be a fair and even handed host and you do hear him update and inform his opinions over time

The Firn Line - Alpinism podcast - a relatively young podcast but very interesting

The Enormocast - surprised no-one's mentioned this one - a staple of climbing material podcasts - especially the interviews with Hayden Kennedy on chopping the bolts on the Compressor Route - lots of good interviews by Chris Kalous

Trail Runner Nation - all you need to know about the current state of Trail Running (mostly US but some Euro Stuff)

Jocko Willink - Ex Navy Seal and author of Extreme Ownership - good empowering stuff

That should keep you in plenty of good free material.

S town was a good listen, at times entertaining and at times thought provoking (and also disturbing).

If you fancy something a little more off the wall, try the Blindboy podcast.

A few I listen to have already been mentioned. Quite a few podcasts seem to have stopped posting new episodes recently, but hopefully they'll start up again. Anyway.

Simon Mayos confessions

My dad wrote a porno. Funniest podcast going

Jam crack, although it seems to have gone quiet since October

The bad beta podcast

Showing UP with Lynsey Dyer, really good interviews. Genuinely insightful and thoughtful interviews with Alex Honnold and Conrad Anker. The other 3 or so are good to

Alpinist

Dirtbag diaries.

We need more heroes

UKCs own Factor two

Simon Evans Goes to Market

i used to recommend The Bugle as the funniest thing in the world, since John Oliver left its nowhere near as good but still worth a listen.

NPR Politics is good but to be honest, these days, I get too depressed being reminded how far the govt in that country has sunk.

 Jon Stewart 23 Jan 2018

You Are Not So Smart (psychology and stuff - and, for some reason, baking cookies)

In reply to jethro kiernan:

I can second the Enormocast! Great humour, easy to listen to voice, interesting variety. Climbing related but not in that dull mind numbing way of the 101 training podcasts out there.

For something light-hearted, "No such thing as a fish" is a comedy put together by the QI researchers weekly based around 4 facts.

Gardeners Question time is easy listening, but you need to have an interest in horticulture.

In reply to jethro kiernan:

Some great suggestions on there I’m going to sample a few over the next couple of weeks

thanks
