Wasn't sure where to post this.

TL;DR - land bought by climbers in the 1980s to safeguard access to the Smoke Bluffs, the most popular climbing area in Canada, is under threat of sale to the local municipality by the charity that was entrusted with the land. A sale would result in an irreversible loss of access leverage for climbers, in a town with very high land values, ambitious property developers and a local government prone to abrupt policy change.

If you feel any connection to Squamish climbing, maybe because you have visited or hope to, please consider signing the petition here. https://www.change.org/p/save-the-smoke-bluffs-federation-of-mountain-clubs... There are links to more details on the situation at the change dot org page.

The petition is led by Backcountry BC, the access wing of the BC Mountaineering Club, one of Canada's oldest climbing clubs (founded in 1907).

I spoke with The BMC a few months ago about their policy toward the lands they hold for access in England and Wales. Aside from some exceptionally-unlikely hypothetical scenarios, their policy is "never sell".
