A friendly note from your friendly BMC Climbing Warden

A reminder that full holiday-season restrictions are in place on the south side of Cheddar Gorge over the coming week from Saturday 28th May until Sunday 5th June

All climbing on the south side will be closed, including both weekends, with the exceptions of the crags at the top end (from Reservoir Walls to Pig Hole). Climbing is also permitted on Horseshoe Bend Buttress, Yew Tree Wall and Ginsberg Wall but only after 6pm

From 6th June until 30th June, much of the climbing on the south side reopens (with the exception of unrestored routes, and other crags and routes with “Winter Season” access such as Sloworm Tower, Wind Rock, High Rock multipitch/Far Right Wing, and the multipitch routes from Pinnacle Bay). For full details please consult Martin Crockers’ Guide or BMC website

The full scale restrictions in place next week will also come into effect through all of July and August. Climbing on the North side of the gorge remains unrestricted (with very few exceptions) year-round

A reminder also that, whatever the time of year, proof of 3rd party liability insurance must be carried (such as BMC or affiliated club membership card/membership email) whenever climbing on the southside and presented on request

Finally a reminder of why sticking to the access agreement negotiated through the BMC is important. The landowner has made concessions over the years, relaxing climbing restrictions that had earlier been in place. From 2019 further relaxations have been trialled (top-end crags and 6pm liftings in holiday periods) and their continuation is conditional on climbers sticking to the wider agreement throughout the year. Infringements by a minority threaten access for the majority. Further relaxations are potentially on the table but are unlikely to proceed unless self-regulation by the climbing community is demonstrated
