Rim width question

Need to change my front wheel as its quite old (and cheap) 16mm internal width rim and 40mm tubeless tyres.

Rear wheel is a bit newer and runs nicely, 17mm internal width.

Should I just replace the front wheel for similar or change both wheels to a wider rim like 21mm?

Will I gain much benefit in terms of stability and handling?

In reply to The Potato:

if your forks can take it with a 21mm u can put some wider tyres on and it will give you more comfort and u can run it at a lower psi so can also mean more grip it depends on what you using bike for and if u want to spend money on it

im not looking to put wider tyres on it

Therefore there's not a lot of point. You'd get marginally better aerodynamics but you'd never notice the difference unless you're an absolute monster. Upgrading wheels is worth it, but I'm not convinced the current vogue for wider rim widths is worth following for bikes designed for roads.

Also depending on the tyres you are using a wider rim can have some odd effects on it as it will sit different on the rim
