Help please.

I had to replace the rear wheel on my road bike. I removed the newish cassette, and replaced the cassette onto the new wheel.

All went well, but there was a lot of play in the cassette. Then I noticed a spacer came with the new wheel. I wondered if that should go on the splines before the cassette, (I'm pretty sure one wasn't there with the old wheel). I tried it and noe there's no wobble.

So is this normal/optional/important?

Ta.

Spacer needed as the wheel will support different cassette sizes depending on spec.

Fewer cogs need spacer, no wobble good.

Thanks.

Spacer goes on first between the spokes and cassette. The one that came with my news wheels is called a "spacer for 8/9/10 speed" - so I presume 8, 9 and 10 speed cassettes are all the same width, but the newer 11 speeds cassettes are a tiny bit wider.

According to the video I used to remove my cassette there’s a specific way to replace it, otherwise you get movement.

Not sure if this helps?
