Hello

I'm trying to get out of my car for commuting.

Due to the very hilly route and not being a cyclist I'm looking at an e-bike to get me going.

I guess that means a hybrid. Looking to spend about 1k so it works out cost neutral fairly quickly. Any recommendations?

Based in Sheffield.

Thank

A

I haven't seen one and hub motor and v-brakes are things I would pay extra to avoid but it reviews well.

Well worth looking at slightly dearer bikes from 2019 model year; there are some great discounts out there.

Mudguards, a rack and at least one pannier (something cheap from Gumtree will be fine) are all pretty much essential for commuting; I would also heartily recommend that you take some training. Modern road training is very different to the cycling proficiency nonsense that I got at school and will make you faster, safer and more comfortable on the bike.  Details:

Best of luck and good on ya for binning the car.

Are there really discounts? My LBS basically has no stock as demand has been sky high and new stock is not getting through. I see the same story on an ebike FB group.

How does 500 quid (31%) sound? Try searching Google for '2019 ebike discount'

The best buys seem to be on the mainland, presumably because of much greater market saturation over there.

Why do all city ebikes look like A level projects?

I got a Carrera hybrid off Gumtree

Then this kit

I built the battery myself but this one will give you 25 to 100km range depending on the pedal assist level you have it on

PS. Halfords do some pretty affordable eBike if you don't fancy building your own.

Same bike as mine! I fitted the Samsung kit from Dillinger though. 2 years and 1700 miles done now, very happy. Had a couple of rear wheel punctures though which are a pain. Something to bear in mind in your under saddle tool kit, be shire to have a spanner that fits the much larger nuts on the motor wheel.

Built my own for £528

Bike £159

Battery £ 230

1000watt rear hub and controllers £139

The bike was just a cheep thing but with front suss and disk brakes which are a must for this thing.

Battery's 625Wh

It takes riding to a whole new level.  Brilliant for off roading but nothing to mental.

Going to upgrade the bike some point .

I still love my regular bike though , it will take far harder terrain.

I've got a Raleigh hybrid new for around £1000 and it really makes mincemeat of the hills here in Devon, and for a change the saddle is comfortable too. It has a rear light, disc brakes and rack, useful for storage if you get a bag.

That hub makes it a pedelec, not an ebike.  There's a 250w limit for an ebike on the road - above that it needs to be insured and registered etc as a pedelec

Yes it's not legal for the roads but a 250w or any bike that you have to pedal before the motor kicks in is a pedelec. The 1000w motor makes it an S-pedelec.
