In 1865, the term "alpinism" had yet to be invented, but the sport, pioneered by enterprising Victorian gentleman, was in full swing! After a decade of Alpine exploration and conquest, the Golden Age reached its climax in 1865, immortalised by 65 first ascents across the Alps, including 5 major summits in the Mont-Blanc Massif. The Matterhorn tragedy on 14th July 1865 was to mark the end of this heroic and carefree period! It also provoked public outcry at the perceived folly of mountaineering!
