The Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) are this year allowing people to 'buy' their winter Fell Top Assessor Service for a day, with a personal sponsorship scheme that will help fund the service.

For a fee of £25 for individuals or £50 for companies the conditions reports, which appear on the Weatherline website, are available for daily sponsorship. Sponsors get a shout on the Weatherline website, plus a tweet about who has sponsored the Fell Top Assessors that day - a novel gift or a great marketing tool for your business, according to the LDNPA.

Every day between now and the end of March assessors Jon Bennett or Jason Taylor take it in turns to climb Helvellyn to report on ground conditions at one of Lakeland's most popular walking and winter climbing destinations. Already this year they are reporting full winter snow and ice conditions - as this recent pic from site user John Henderson confirms.

'We think this sponsorship opportunity will inspire and excite the thousands of loyal people who use the Weatherline service every day - and it could also make an ideal birthday or Christmas gift' said LDNPA Information Services Team Leader Andrew Robbins.

'Money raised through this initiative will help towards funding the continuation of the Fell Top Assessors' Service and to maintain winter safety on the fells.'

This year the daily service - which includes Christmas Day and New Year's Day – is promising a quicker turnaround with new technology allowing assessors to post their reports and pictures online as soon as they have returned from the mountain. This should ensure that today's conditions are available on the website from mid-afternoon instead of the previous 'overnight' facility.

Details are also available on the 0844 846 2444 phone service.
