Despite 40 to 50 mile per hour winds, driving rain and sub-zero night temperatures, a respectable eight out of 10 of those taking part managed to complete the challenge, which saw teams of young folk hiking unaided across 35-55 miles of Dartmoor (age depending) over the weekend of 10-11th May. 2400 teenagers took part.

A further 272 youngsters with physical or educational needs did the Jubilee Challenge, either as part of a team or as individuals, each one accompanied by an Officer Cadet from Exeter University Officer Training Corps.

The armed forces provided logistical support, help on the ground and loads of heavy equipment. New for this year was a GPS tracking system that allowed coordinators to monitor teams' progress in real time.

As well as a fun challenge for kids the Ten Tors is treated as a multi-agency exercise, a chance for the military to practice civil contingency responsibilities with the assistance of the emergency services and specialist organisations including Dartmoor Search and Rescue Group and volunteers from The British Red Cross, who provided medical cover. This year 1100 personnel were involved.
