Peak Access - Add Your Voice

Peak District walkers and climbers can currently register their ideas about places where access could be improved. Some of these suggestions might one day find their way onto the ground.

'Have you ever thought, when out and about in the Peak, there really should be a gate here or a stile there, or wondered why there isn't a footpath between one particular place and another?' asks the BMC's Peak Access rep Henry Folkard.

The Peak Local Access Forum (Peak LAF) keeps a 'wish list' of places where there has been a request for better access, and National Park officers do what they can to facilitate access or create concessionary routes in such places.

'If a landowner is not initially willing to arrange something on private land, windows of opportunity can crop up in the context of a wider negotiation like a High Level Stewardship Scheme for instance' says Henry.

'If there is not reasonable access onto open access land, things ought to be more straightforward, even if what one person thinks is reasonable is unreasonable to another.'

Now is your chance to register anything on your personal wish list. Drop Henry Folkard an e-mail and he will feed your request to a Peak LAF meeting next month.

'There is no guarantee your request will be met' Henry says, 'but at least if it is logged it stands a chance.'

Some of the locations already on the wish list include:

Rod Moor, High Riggs, Parson's Piece, Furnace Hill, Linen Dale / Housley, Dove Top, Eyam Moor to Sir William Hill (north), Stanshope, Gratton Hill, Fallinge Edge, Gypsy Bank / Wolfscote Dale, Harland Edge, Longstone Edge / Wardlow Hey, Rudd Hill, Wards Piece to Edale End, Loftshaw, Hollingdale Plantation, Kirk Edge, Hazelbadge, Dove Bank, Longdendale trail / Shining Clough, Monsal Dale / Brushfield
