Despite the worst weather ever experienced on the event, the annual West Highland Way Race was won in a record time at the weekend.

172 competitors set off from Milngavie at 1am on Saturday, but only 119 made the full 96 miles to Fort William - a higher than normal dropout rate.

'We had the heaviest rain that I've seen in all the years I've been involved with the race' event director Ian Beattie tells us. 'The first 24 hours or so were really very poor, and that definitely slowed people down. The long rocky stretch along Loch Lomondside is particularly treacherous in the wet, and this must have contributed. Sunday was an improvement, but still, fewer runners than we normally see made it to the finish in under 20 hours.'

But in spite of the weekend's challenging conditions winner Terry Conway came in about 1hr 20mins ahead of his nearest rival to break the race record with an impressive time of 15:39:15. Rosie Bell was the quickest woman at 20:15:41.

And site user Alicia Hudelson came in at a respectable 26:31:00, having looked for a bit of advice from past competitors in the forums prior to the event (see here).
