Jack's Rake - Two Deaths in a Week

Two scramblers have died in the past week in separate incidents on Jack's Rake, Pavey Ark.

On 15 June Howard Gladwyn, 48, from West Yorkshire, fell an estimated 700-800 feet from the route and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Yesterday (20 June) Susannah Cox, 37, from Lancaster, also suffered a serious fall. She was given first aid, but later died.

This classic and highly popular grade 1 scramble takes a rising diagonal line across the southeast face of Pavey Ark, one of the largest crags in the Lake District. It is often busy, and although it's frequently underestimated the route crosses some serious ground for the grade. The recent deaths are a tragic reminder to take even easy scrambles seriously.

Sad news, but it should be kept in mind that statistically rare events will sometimes cluster even though they are still random. e.g. "Deaths from Horsekicks in the Prussian Army" see http://www.umass.edu/wsp/statistics/lessons/poisson/index.html
