UKHillwalking.com has launched today. Building on the popularity of sister site UKClimbing.com, we will cater to everyone who gets their kicks on foot in the hills.
With your help we aim to create a warm and friendly place to discuss all things hillwalking, from Corbett collecting to the walking boot-versus-approach shoe debate - in fact anything to do with the wild high places of Britain and beyond.
The specific UKHillwalking.com Forums, like Hilltalk, have been created to ask questions about specific hills and mountains, share experiences, find a partner, sell stuff, get advice on the latest hard shell jackets or just chat.
One of the cornerstones of UKHillwalking.com is the Logbook system, which already lists over 3,000 hills and mountains in the UK and further afield. This is where you can record and map your walks (or runs or bike rides) with the aid of a simple mapping interface. It features Map My Route, Log My Summits and an Activity Diary. That's right, you can keep a record of not only what you summited, when and with whom, but also how many miles you walked, over how many hours (or days), and how high you ascended. Personal adventures can either be shared or kept private. We hope the Logbooks will be useful to anyone working through a hill list, whether you're on your first attempt at all the Hewitts or a third Munro round, collecting Wainwrights or Welsh 3,000'ers.
There are two of us working on UKH editorial to bring you regular hillwalking news and feature articles that cover ideas on where to hillwalk at the weekend, what to wear and how to keep yourself safe. There'll be gear reviews too of course.
See today's offerings for a flavour of UKH:
- Sarah Stirling talks to Mark Diggins co-ordinator of the Sportscotland Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) and an IFMGA qualified Mountain Guide in The Need To Know On British Avalanches
- Roger Wild ponders a serious question in When is Hillwalking Not Hillwalking?
- In the destinations section Dan Bailey describes six pocket sized Winter Hillwalking Adventures in Snowdonia, the Lakes and Scotland
- and Mike Raine gives some suggestions for Winter Walking in Snowdonia
Just to keep us honest and to give everyone a voice and a chance to express their opinion there is an editorial forum thread attached to each article or gear review we publish.
That's about it for now. We will look closely at the features of the site over the next few months in a series of mini-articles - it is a work in progress - and we will always appreciate your advice and feedback.
But please do register at the site, that means that you will see photos at full size, be able to use the forums, have a forum profile and your own logbook. Registering also helps us get advertising which funds the whole caboodle.
If you want a bit of a laugh check out the Mike Knipe's Daft Baggers and The Art of Ticking Summits
All the best,
Dan Bailey and Sarah Stirling
