The 'Magic Mountain' has been and a source of myths and legends for years. The NY Times references Jules Verne, Francoise Mitterand,The Nazis and even Mossad being interested in the mountain at times (http://6thfloor.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/07/07/the-myth-and-magic-of-bugarach/?_r=0).
More recently it was prophesised to be the only surviving area for the end of the world (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2012/nov/19/bugarach-french-village-survive-mayan-apocalypse). The area has long attracted those who "wish to believe".
There are 2 routes. The most interesting follows 'La voie fenetre'. Approx 3km with 490m of ascent. A little scrambling but grade 1 maximum. Follow the D45 just after the town of bugalach (if approaching from bugarach). Stop just after rounding a bend with a river. - parking for 5 or so cars. If you reach a farm on your left then you have gone too far.
There is a gate on your left signposted zone pastoral. Follow the yellow signs for pic de bugarach. En-route you will pass a hole in the cliff - this is the eponyous la fenetre (window). The summit is the first high point reached and is marked by a very small cairn (please see photos). The cliffs on the other side of this look quite considerable so take care in high winds. Return by the same route or take the standard route to the col on the D14 and take the road to bugarach and the sentier (footpath) back to the car.
