Hill features

Les Diablerets is the highest mountain in the Swiss Canton of Vaud. Its summit provides an excellent viewpoint for almost all of the principal peaks in the Western Alps. Although the usual approach has been somewhat spoilt by the Glacier 3000 lift installations, parts of the mountain still retain a distinctly remote feel.

Legend has it that the rock faces that surround the village of Les Diablerets were dangerous, and an occasional home to the devil. Several peaks make up the massif, so this legend may account for the name of the mountain, literally meaning 'little devils'.

The rock faces themselves provide single and multi-pitch climbs, as well as two via ferrata.

Approach notes

The mountain is usually accessed on the north side from the Col du Pillon, either by foot or by utilising the cable car to Sex Rouge at 2971m. The Col du Pillon is 5-10mins drive or bus from Les Diablerets town, which is linked to the Swiss rail network via a mountain train to Aigle. The mountain may also be accessed from the Rhone valley to the south via the Col de Sanetsch.

The nearest crags to the valley road at the Col du Pillon are Mérite sportif, La cave and Dalles du Dar around 1600m, 15-30 minutes walk in, while several crags are situated near the Swiss Alpine Club refuge Cabane des Diablerets at 2485m. In between, at 1800m and 45 minutes from the road, are Festival and Mérite alpin.
