It's Not Just a Mountain

© The Epicentre

The Epicentre recently teamed up with Daniel Wildey PhotographyKenton Cool and Lakpa Rita and Sherpa Adventure Gear to produce an in-store interview with Kenton Cool and Lakpa Rita Sherpa.

The pair stopped off for a day on the hill in the Lake District during their recent Everest Uncovered lecture tour, and even introduced Lakpa to slacklining in Ambleside’s Rothay Park. Judging by the film they were in relaxed mood; chatting candidly on a range of subjects from Kenton’s triple crown (the ascent of Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse), mountain rescue at 8000m, the relationship (and violence) between Western climbers and Sherpas, the inimitable Ueli Steck and the future of mountaineering.

What comes across most strongly in the film is the friendship and mutual respect between these two climbers regardless of their different backgrounds, their different reasons for climbing, and in stark contrast to any perceived tension between the two cultures.

It’s hard to believe such down-to-earth men have so often visited the roof of the world and come back to tell their story with humility and good-humour.
