Black Diamond ReVolt Headtorch Video

2013 sees the launch of the ReVolt Headlamp from Black Diamond, which uses either rechargeable power or traditional alkaline batteries. The ReVolt can be recharged directly via a USB cable wherever there is power - vehicles, solar energy panels and of course plug sockets - making it extremely versatile and perfect for long trips away as it can be recharged even in remote and isolated areas.

The ReVolt features:

One triplepower LED plus two singlepower white LED's and 2 singlepower red LED's which emit up to 110 lumens. Settings include full strength in proximity and distance modes, dimming, strobe, red night vision and lock mode. The ReVolt also has a three level power meter, which shows remaining battery life for 3 seconds after switching on headlamp and it is protected against splashing or sprayed water from any angle.

I nver really got the whole USB rechargable thing until watching the video. I like the fact you can charge it but still use normal AA batteries on the hill. You could leave it in the car ready for use/call-outs, but be safe in the knowledge you can chuck normal batteries in it when needed (at 110 Lumens I guess that'll be often!) Will have to wait for the price to come down before I can afford it though! One observation: Why are headtorches not coming with an overhead strap anymore, and batteries in the front? I like the overhead strap and balance from the battery pack at the rear. I also think it keeps the batteries warmer having them at the back, under your hood/hat.

So aren't the Petzl rechargables much better since they use a LiIon battery ? Like better lifetime in cold weather, no "memmory effect" etc ?

maybe, i dont know. but the cost of a non-standard battery or one with a bd label will get passed onto the user. its a nice step forward with the ease of use of usb then a step back with what battery works with it.

That's what I thought when I saw NiMH on the re-labelled batteries.
