With a heritage of 78 years alpine experience behind them, Italian outdoor brand Salewa are entering the UK this spring. Starting with a range of their award winning shoes, rucsacks and sleeping bags, Salewa gear will be distributed by Wild Country from their base in Tideswell and available across the UK in specialist shops.

In recent years the Salewa story has been one of unparalleled growth both in Europe and the USA and their clothing, shoes and ethos are well established. British climbers and walkers may be less familiar than their European counterparts with Salewa, which has its new base in the Alpine town of Bolzano (close to the Brenner Pass), but the company is keen to change that and make a lasting impression on the UK market.

Jason Myers the UK Sales Director explains: “Salewa is very keen on the UK market precisely because it is a very specialist market. The company philosophy is one of utilising its Alpine heritage and experience to create almost a 'one stop shop' for anyone interested in the outdoors and they feel that the discerning UK enthusiast will take to the technicality and experience that their products represent.”

Interestingly the Salewa range, unlike other brands, is designed to appeal to the most hardcore of climbers as well as the more recreational outdoor enthusiast. So the same quality, style, performance and attention to detail that is found in their four season mountaineering boots can be seen in their hiking packs, sleeping bags and tents - although some gear may be aimed at less testing circumstances it doesn't mean it's less well tested! You can hear more about this philosophy in this film about the company:

So for their spring 2013 UK launch (although plenty of shops have snapped up gear already) Wild Country chose three complementary parts of Salewa's range to present - shoes, packs and sleeping bags - each with a superb collection of products well suited to the British market.

Shoes: The Salewa shoe range can be broken down into three parts: mountaineering, featuring their award winning 'true' approach shoe range with its innovative 3F fit and distinctive styling headed by the bestselling Mountain Trainers and Firetails; and their superb and impressively lightweight walking boots like the Rapace or Mountain Trainer Mid, all of which should shake up the notion of what's possible for the UK hiker. Best selling, highly regarded and with best in class awards at the recent trade shows they're stylish objects of desire backed by a super technical pedigree – and a no blister guarantee unmatched in the industry!!

Rucsacks: From super hardcore Alpinists to peak baggers in the lakes everyone's looking for the same thing: for the load they carry not to define the day's experience. And it's here where the Salewa heritage of over 70 years making packs shows through in the attention to detail and superlative styling that runs from the lightest mountaineering rucsack to the bestselling hiking packs. So from elegant and feature packed Mountain Guide to the Ascent hiking series there's a purity of line, consistency of design and a technical bent to make the load bearing more bearable whether you're having a spindrift nightmare on the Ben or enjoying a sun soaked sweat fest on Snowdon!

Sleeping Bags: An extensive collection with lots of well thought out design points make Salewa sleeping bags a great choice for climbers or campers looking for a fresh approach. And fresh is an apt description because these bags come with a unique feature, one that makes tent life a more pleasant experience; their patented, silverised, odour eating lining which helps devour sweaty smells and prolong the life of the bags, whether down or synthetic. Add this to contour hugging shapely designs, high fill power down or Ecoloft fillings and cool colours and this becomes a sweet collection well worth a look.

So not really new to the UK ? (think I bought my Salewa 'bendy' crampons sometime in 1975, mail order from Field & Trek)

Tiso has been selling their kit for quite a while now, I like most of the gear they make so it'll be good to have them in more shops.

They are massive in Europe - go in any German, Austrian or Italian outdoor shop and you'll see lots of their stuff. My missus has a pair of their boots, and the gear is good. Lots of their stuff is green (like the trainer in the pic above).
