Berghaus Extrem Caldera 35 Rucksack£140, added Jan/2013, see all Berghaus news & reviews
announcement by Berghaus
Inspired by an ice climbing trip to the Italian Alps, the Caldera challenges the accepted norm of mountaineering packs. 'Quick and efficient' is the mantra for a climbing sack that uses zip access to allow fast entry into the main bag, combined with a well thought through internal layout for the efficient storage and segregation of gear, and a good sized lid pocket for items that are needed most often.
Key features include:
A removable Berghaus Verteflex II frame, which not only delivers great freedom of movement, flexibility and load transfer, but overlaps back on itself to prevent the frame and rucksack from barrelling; a pivoting, easily removable hipbelt; an internal gear rack designed to keep climbing gear well organised and close to the back during the walk in; and a reinforced external rope strap that tucks away into its own pocket when not in use.
Graeme Ettle comments:
“I wore the Caldera for a six day mountaineering trip. I love the big mesh pocket in the hood, perfect for map and compass, and separate from the rest of my nick nacks in the top. While carrying the bag loaded I did not really notice it, which usually means it's doing its job well. Everyone I met instantly asked what the bag was – it has a wow factor I've never had before. It gets my thumbs up.”
The Caldera 35 is lightweight (1.29kg or 0.96kg stripped) and tough, delivering efficiency and load carrying comfort in a stunning package for the most adventurous climbers around.
The Berghaus autumn/winter 2012 range is available now from the website below and specialist outdoor retailers.
