Glenmore Lodge Instructors See The Light

For the last month Glenmore Lodge instructors have been testing the new Petzl Tikka XP² Core head torch. This new addition to the Petzl range of head torches has all of the characteristics you'd expect from a Tikka. High output LEDs, focused beam or flood light options, and a red LED for preserving night vision all in a stylish and lightweight package. The real development is in the unit's power source ... Petzl's new CORE battery technology.

The lithium-ion polymer CORE battery is programmable and importantly rechargeable. Used to their full capacity these torches will mean a saving of at least 900 AAA batteries during the lifespan of the rechargeable 'core' of each torch.

For Glenmore Lodge this means a total saving of 14,400 AAA batteries, further helping us towards our 10:10 carbon reduction targets, as well as a significant cost saving.

The torches have already been put to the test and initial results have been excellent. Used out on the hill on Winter Mountain Leader courses the torch has compared favourably with all others in terms of light output and thanks to the battery management system you know exactly the duration of light to expect.

A number of instructors have also used the torch for running at night. The unit is very light on the head and produces an excellent beam for seeing the path ahead at speed.

Glenmore Lodge instructor Giles Trussell said: "Initially we were sceptical about a rechargeable battery but are totally converted. The unit delivers a long battery life and the control you get from the management system means you know exactly what you to expect, a great torch in a compact and light weight package."
